Taken in the summer of August 2002, a year and a half prior to the devastating earthquake which destroyed 80% of the city and the Citadel (Arga).
Bam is or was a beautiful city filled with plots of date palms all filled on a timeshare basis of crystal clear water that flows down deep channels along the sides of the streets.
Bam Citadel or known local as Arga was undergoing a lengthy reconstruction operation when we visited resulting in then many of the buildings having been reconstructed to a wonderful level of craftsmenship. The main citadel sits overlooking the city below encircled by the strong wide defensive walls. The citadel at the centre provides a fantasic view over the old city below and the new city beyond.
Unfortunately the remarkable reconstructing work that took place has now largely been destroyed, hopefully one day it will be rebuilt back to its original state. |
